LifePath and the Meals on Wheels program deliver 550 meals each day to elders in our area. In addition to bringing a hot meal at noon to homebound seniors, the drivers provide a "wellness check." The program also supplies meals to congregate centers. Sadly, some elders have to make a choice between food and medications. This should not be! I am also aware of a new trend... Hospitals frequently discharge patients directly home after a very short stay after surgery. People ask for Meals on Wheels for a few weeks. This is a new need. The Walkathon fills the more than $100,000.00 gap needed to maintain the service at the same level.
In years past, I walked my three miles and completed pledges for elders from the South County Senior Center. The last few years, I had to use my walking poles. I have to modify my participation this year... I am having surgery the same week as the Walkathon. However, the elders on my team will be my stand-ins! They will walk for me in bits and pieces as they are able to do. They will keep me posted on their efforts by text messages.
